CANYON LIVE OAK

Quercus turbinella

Beech Family (Fagaceae)

Canyon live oak is native to the canyons and arroyos of the Southwest, entering our area only in the southern Colorado Plateau region, but it is thought to be cold-hardy at least to Zone 5. It has attractive, hollylike, evergreen leaves and a rugged, usually multi-stemmed growth form. It is relatively slow-growing, but reaches about 15 feet in height at maturity. The foliage varies from pale green to blue-green in color. Canyon live oak grows in the lower foothill zone where precipitation averages 12-16". It is among the most heat-tolerant of our native trees. Canyon live oak makes a handsome companion for desert sage, green mormon tea, and dwarf yucca.
