MOUNTAIN LOVER

This beautiful, evergreen subshrub is most conspicuous in winter beneath the oaks and maples in the canyons. It keeps its shiny, bright green leaves year-round, and is a startling sight peeking out from under the snow banks. It should be planted in less-exposed places when used at lower elevation, as it does have some tendency to winter-burn. It needs regular water in summer and appreciates a rich, moisture-retentive soil. The tiny, inconspicuous pink flowers appear at the leaf bases in late spring. These are quite pretty when examined closely. Mountain lover can be used effectively as a groundcover in shady spots, especially in combination with creeping Oregon grape, which is often its companion in the wild. It also makes a good backdrop for shade-loving perennials.
