WHITE FIR

Abies concolor

Pine Family
(Pinaceae)

White fir is probably the most common conifer at middle elevations in the mountains throughout the southern two-thirds of our region. It has several advantages over its more widely planted relative, blue spruce (Picea pungens). These include softer, more friendly foliage and greater drought tolerance. Its deeper, more extensive root system also makes it less prone to toppling in the summer windstorms we often experience. On the other hand, it is less tolerant of poorly drained soils and overwatering, making it a poor choice for heavily trafficked traditional turf areas. White fir needs room to express itself, as it can be quite large at maturity. As this excellent tree becomes deservedly more popular, more compact selections suitable for smaller landscapes may become available.
