BIGTOOTH MAPLE

Acer grandidentatum

Maple Family
(Aceraceae)

Bigtooth maple is the Intermountain West's unique contribution to autumn color, with classic maple leaves that turn magnificent shades of crimson, orange, and scarlet. The smooth, gray bark is another nice feature. Bigtooth maple is a good shade tree for small yards and is relatively fast-growing, especially with some supplemental water. A tree of the canyons and foothills, it likes well-drained but relatively rich soils. It combines well with Gambel oak and with flowering shrubs like mallowleaf ninebark, Utah serviceberry, and littleleaf mockorange. Bigtooth maple performs best with plenty of space to develop its characteristic tree growth form. A sparsely planted understory will help to speed its growth.
