CURL-LEAF MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY

This tough little tree of dry mountain ridges can be rather slow-growing at first. But with its shiny, almond-shaped, evergreen leaves and attractive, vertical growth form, it is well worth the wait. Its shape becomes more twisted and rugged with age. This tree can handle a heavy snow load, but it also performs well where winters are cold but dry, as the foliage has little tendency to winter-burn. The feathery, curled fruits appear in summer. These are especially pretty when backlit by late sun. Curl-leaf mountain mahogany is a preferred food of mule deer and will need protection when young. Older plants are tolerant of browsing and can be pruned heavily if desired, though this is usually not necessary. This plant is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or for a shelter belt or screen.
