FIRLEAF PENSTEMON

Penstemon abietinus

Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae)

Native to just a small area in the mountains of central Utah, firleaf penstemon has been a tiny treasure known to few people. Fortunately, it is quite easy to grow and could readily be made available if warranted by demand. It forms loose mats up to a foot across but only an inch or two tall, with fine, needle-like, bright green foliage. In late May the plants become completely covered with masses of cheerful blue snapdragonlike flowers. Tiny metallic blue bees find the blossoms irresistible, and add to the decorative effect. Firleaf penstemon likes a well drained soil and occasional watering in summer. It combines well with other low perennials like longleaf phlox and fringed puccoon. It can grow in sun or dappled shade.
