PINYON PINE

Pinus edulis

Pine Family
(Pinaceae)

This is the native pinyon of the foothills in the eastern part of our region. It features a compact, conical growth form that becomes more open and rounded with age. This is one tree not likely to overgrow its space, as even the largest individuals rarely exceed 15 feet in height. This makes it a good choice for yards with limited space. It requires very little maintenance and is best left to develop its natural growth form. To enjoy the added benefit of edible pinenuts, plant at least two trees. The local jays will thank you for this. Another nice feature of this tree is the smell of pine sap on hot summer afternoons. Pinyon pine combines well with drought-hardy shrubs like Fremont barberry and, of course, with its faithful sidekick, Utah juniper.
